News should do more than generate clicks

Earlier this year, after investigating pesticide use and cancer rates, we mailed localized health data directly to residents in two Iowa counties with some of the highest pesticide use and cancer rates in the country. We wanted to ensure the reporting reached the communities most affected, including people who may not have seen the stories online.
We also hosted a live virtual panel featuring journalists, researchers and advocates to help readers better understand the connections between pesticides, public health and cancer. More than 170 people registered for the event, and attendees told us it helped them better understand the issue and identify additional resources.
We believe news should do more than generate clicks. It should help people better understand the issues shaping their communities and provide information they can use.
