Here at Investigate Midwest, we understand how to cover large agribusiness and its impacts on our food sources.
We also know that, these days, the news can feel especially unpredictable and relentless.
As a nonprofit news organization, we’re committed to telling stories that affect rural individuals, families and communities in the Midwest that might otherwise go untold — about climate change, the Farm Bill, and pollution and drought affecting the Mississippi River Basin.
We keep the spotlight on large corporations, politicians and policymakers, and entities that need to be kept accountable.

Our award-winning journalism in 2024 highlights the impact of Investigate Midwest’s work on public awareness and policy:
- Sky Chadde, in collaboration with Flatwater Free Press, won the Explanatory Reporting first place award from the Society of Environmental Journalists and SABEW’s Best of Business award for exposing the environmental impacts of Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen’s hog empire.
- Ben Felder, honored by the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists with: Third place for uncovering how Poultry Feeding Operation (PFO) permits bypass stricter regulations, impacting rural communities’ air and water quality. Second place for debunking myths about Chinese farmland ownership and providing clarity on global agricultural policies.
- Mónica Cordero earned an honorable mention from the North American Agricultural Journalists Writing Awards for her work with Harvest Public Media on the challenges farmworkers face with heat stress.
