Food prices going up (even on your Fourth of July burger)

Pricier burger for Fourth of July

It’s a traditional American scene on the Fourth of July: flags, fireworks and burgers on the grill.

But this year, it’s going to cost consumers more than it did last year — at a time when other necessities, such as gas, also have high prices.

The cost of a home-grilled burger has increased more than 10% since this time last year, according to the USDA. The cost increase includes all the typical ingredients: buns, cheese, lettuce and ground beef.

It’s not just hamburgers. As we reported earlier this year, food prices are outstripping historical inflation. The USDA expects the high prices to continue through at least this year.

The number of cattle and hogs have all fallen since 2021, according to the USDA, which may explain the increased consumer price.

OPINION: A big win for plant-based meat companies | Dave Dickey, columnist

When it comes to product labeling Big Meat thinks consumers have the brains of a Regulan bloodworm (yeah, a Star Trek reference). For reasons beyond comprehension, Big Meat believes Walmart shoppers are unable to distinguish the difference between meat from an animal and meat alternatives from plants.
